Some days just feel a little extra special — and this one definitely did.
I decided to take my mom on a little surprise day trip to Girdwood. We’ve been there plenty of times before through the years, but I didn’t want this to feel like just another visit. I wanted to make it memorable.
We hit the road around 8 AM, driving along the Turnagain Arm; easily one of my favorite stretches in all of Alaska. No matter how many times I see it, it still takes my breath away. The water, the mountains, the way the light hits everything just right… it never gets old.
First stop: The Bake Shop for breakfast. This place is a must. Cozy vibes, great coffee, and the kind of hearty breakfast that makes you feel like you’re already winning the day. If you’re ever in Girdwood, this is always my go-to recommendation.
After fueling up, we did a quick hike to Virgin Creek Falls. It’s a short, peaceful trail that leads to one of the most beautiful waterfalls — seriously, it looks like something out of a postcard. I love coming here in both summer and winter, and it never disappoints.
Then came the big surprise…
I booked us a helicopter tour with Alpine Air Girdwood.
My mom had never been in a helicopter before, and watching her reaction was everything. We chose one of the shorter scenic flights, but wow — it was absolutely magical. We flew over glaciers, alpine valleys, and forested mountains. We even spotted a couple of moose and a bear from above!
Seeing Chugach State Park, and Girdwood Valley from the air like that — wild and untouched — gave me chills. It was such a cool, peaceful moment to share with my mom.
If you’re ever in Girdwood and looking for something unforgettable, I highly recommend a flightseeing tour. It’s such a unique way to experience this part of Alaska, and honestly, it made our whole day feel like an adventure.
